Moving can be exciting, wonderful and stressful all at once. Here is a list of some helpful tips you should take into consideration before moving into your new home.

Two Months Before You Move

SORT AND PURGE YOUR BELONGINGS

It’s a good thing to go through every room in your house and decide what you want to keep and what you want to get rid of or sell. Having a yard sale or a garage sale is a great way to make some extra money and to whittle down your belongings. Donating your clothes and giving them to the needy is also a wonderful option to slim down your belongings. Finding a local charitable organization or a second-hand store and donating lesser-used and old items is a great practice that will come in handy when it’s time to pack up in the future. CREATE A MOVING BINDER WITH YOUR IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS

Staying organized during your move is key; this includes all of your paperwork. Compiling a binder with your moving estimates, receipts, moving company info, and notes about where certain things are kept is a great way to cut down on future stress. Keeping things like your insurance policies, children’s school records, home finance documents, passports, medical records and anything else of vital importance all in one place is a convenient way to stay on top of things.

Six Weeks Before You Move

ORGANIZE YOUR CHILDREN’S SCHOOL RECORDS

If you have children, make sure to visit their school and make the proper arrangements for transferring their records to their new school district. Remember that only official, sealed copies of your children’s transcripts, report cards and standardized test results will be accepted.

ORDER YOUR MOVING SUPPLIES

Now it’s time to start ordering the supplies you’ll need for the big move. The major players here are cardboard boxes of all sizes, packing tape/ taping gun, permanent markers, bubble lining, wrapping paper (try to resist using newspaper-transferred ink can stain your possessions and your hands), big specialty containers, dish barrels, wardrobe boxes, a utility knife (to help cut tape), and a rope or bungee cord (great for securing items to the truck). This seems like a lot of materials, but all of these items come in handy when you’re in the midst of moving.

Take measurements of your bigger pieces of furniture and new door frames. Check the room dimensions of your new home to make sure that the larger, more substantial pieces of furniture will fit through the doorways. This would be a tragic thing to forget to do before moving. Doing this a month ahead and knowing that your furniture will fit will give you some peace of mind.

One Month Before You Move

BEGIN PACKING INFREQUENTLY USED ITEMS

A month before you move, start packing the items around your house that you use infrequently. This can be items like your waffle maker, or your wok, or your curling iron, it all depends on how often you use certain items. While you are packing, be sure to clearly label each box and make note of special items that might require additional insurance from your moving company. Make sure to declare in writing items that are valued over $100/pound – like your computer or a big television in the basement. FILL OUT A CHANGE OF ADDRESS FORM

A few weeks before you move, make sure to visit your local post office and fill out a change of address form. If you’re too busy and can’t make it to the post office, you can do this online at: usps.com. It’s wise to ask a close neighbor to keep an eye out for any leftover mail that might show up after you’ve moved.

NOTIFY IMPORTANT PARTIES ABOUT YOUR MOVE

Make sure to let all the important organizations that you interact with frequently know that you are moving. This includes banks, brokerage firms, your employer’s HR department, and any magazine or newspaper subscriptions you may have. Make sure to fill out the proper change of address paperwork and make sure to contact your insurance agent and transfer your medical, property, fire and auto insurance policies. A Week Before You Move

START PACKING YOUR SUITCASES

It’s good to overestimate your timeline and aim to finish your general packing a few days before your move-in date. After that you can start to pack suitcases for you and your family. You should fill these with enough clothes and necessary amenities for the next three days, just to be on the safe side.

DEFROST YOUR FREEZER

Make sure to empty, clean and defrost your freezer at least 24 hours before you move.

Lastly, double-check your moving binder and make sure to take a thorough last look around your home. Did you shut the water off? Did you shut the furnace and air conditioner off? Are all of the light switches turned off? Did you make sure to cancel your utilities with your service providers? Are the windows shut? Did you turn in your old house keys and garage door opener? It’s always good to check things twice.
